Amazon.co.uk Review The Terry Thomas of children's television returns to the screen in Boom, Boom! The Best Of The Original Basil Brush Show. The raffish star, with his distinctive laugh, trademark tweeds and enduring catchphrase, was created in 1963, diligently learning his trade before hitting the big time in the 1970s in his own show. The cheeky vulpine host went on to vex a succession of "Mr"s with his continual interrupting, ad-libbing and appalling jokes:Mr Roy: "Do you know about ethics?" Basil, lisping: "Yes, it's somewhere near Sussex, isn't it?" The show's guest list boasted the best of 1970s celebrity: Alvin Stardust, Cilla Black, John Inman and Demis Roussos to mention just a few--all treated to Basil's unique blend of charm and brusque wit in a series of excruciating sketches. The show was dropped in the 1980s but Boom, Boom! The Best Of The Original Basil Brush Show proves that Basil, now a pop-culture icon, is a truly 21st-century fox. --Helen Baker

The best of Basil August 4, 2008 Graham W. Norman (Perth, Australia) Well I just received the DVD not knowing what to expect. I mean, it has been what, nearly 35 years since I sat down with mum & dad to watch this? Has my level/standard of humour changed? Is he still funny to me? A resounding YES! is what I got when I played this. It's probably twice as funny now as I now get the innuendos now. His guest stars are brilliant, Cilla Black, Lulu and Demis Russos (My dad loved him back then) all played their part beautifully. No cringe factor here, they really looked to be enjoying themselves. I never thought that Demis Russos would be so affectionate and animated towards a puppet. I really can't find a fault with this DVD except I agree with a previous review. Dirty Gertie from No. 30 doesn't rate a mention. I don't even remember anything about dirty Gertie except that particular phrase, so to see why I remember that bit would have been good. BBC, maybe for the next DVD? But honestly I can't see any faults with this DVD. If you loved the original Basil and not the latest resurrection (like me) then this DVD is for you. I hope the BBC recognise how popular this ruffian was, so that more of the original are put onto DVD. I'll be buying them. As I write, my 2 girls (5 and 2) are engrossed in watching the original and loving it. Buy it, you won't be disapointed (and if you have kids, they won't either)
Funny in parts, but a little disappointing August 30, 2003 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
As a big kid I have been enjoying the new Basil Brush shows on TV and bought this DVD hoping that it would be a great reminder of how much better the original Basil really was. Unfortunately having watched it I finished up feeling a bit disappointed. With only 52 minutes of action on offer I thought that these clips would be only the funniest of the funny, but there are quite a few that left me with only a slight smile rather than aching ribs. On the plus side, there are enough genuinely hilarious moments to keep you watching (Basil singing along with Demis Roussos is pure genius) and some of his one-liners had me on the floor. All-in-all I'm glad I bought it and hope that the next compilation offers a bit more of the good stuff!
Where did Gertie go_ January 29, 2002 fgdouglas@hotmail.com (czech Republic) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
A funny enough video, and an hour long of pure Basil is not to be sniffed at and long overdue. I was disappointed though that the storys were not featured more. Little Tikka has only a walk on role. and Dirty Gertie from Number thirty doesn't even rate a mention. So a fine and dandy video and worthy for kids and nostalgia seekers alike, but the best? Surely the best is yeat to come.
Basil's brilliant badinage bomms back! January 21, 2002 M. Nix (UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was delighted to see this video released. Seeing the cheeky little fella again was great fun. I am not sure I would agree with all the selections for this compilation as being Basil's 'best' moments, but I enjoyed the video immensely. I certainly hope that volume two comes out sooner rather then later! Very nostalgic and hugely enjoyable cornball comedy, and none the worse for being so. Buy it if you liked Basil when you were a kid, and relive some golden childhood moments. I don't think you will be disappointed. Oh, and my two year old daughter loved it too, so perhaps the humour is less dated than I thought!
Hello, hello, and welcome to the show! October 27, 2001 Ross Gowland (West Sussex, England) 16 out of 22 found this review helpful
I say everybody, you've simply got to buy my new DVD. It's only 52 minutes long but what laugh-filled minutes they are. There are lots of sketches involving your favourite fox and my friends Mr Derek, Mr Howard and Mr Roy; who could ask for anything more? There are even guest stars too like Demis Rousos, Cilla Black, Alvin Stardust and John Inman....That's right! ...watch out, watch out, Mr Humphries about! Ha ha ha ha haaa! Boom Boom! The picture looks jolly fine for vintage TV and there's a lovely picture of me on the cover too, so go on, what are you waiting for? Best twelve quid you'll ever spend, I can tell you. And lastly, here's a message for drivers travelling northwards on the M6 heading for Brighton. You're going the wrong way you fools! Ha ha ha haaa! Boom Boom! Cheerio. love Basil
