Brilliant July 21, 2008 N. Tate I am of the age when I should not be watching this but I dont care its great.
really bl**dy funny for adults, and little ones love it too February 24, 2007 dick harden (UK) 7 out of 14 found this review helpful
im not normally one who likes originals, especially when the newer ones boast far better technology, but after having managed to pay attention to this dvd for a change, its really bl**dy funny. this has become a sort of comical, light glimpse of britain, back one or two generations (not quite sure exactly when but looks like 70's?) when things were alot more innocent then they are today and before anyone knew what political correctness was. for example, its a mostly british, pasty white town, and everyone has their place and gets on just fine. then, there's the friendly, flouncey kink in the ointment, a hysterical italian lady called mrs. lasagne, (you wouldnt find that today, would u), who manages to cause nearly all the problems (and business) for fireman sam and crew through her clumsiness. my favourite moment, where i nearly fell off the counch belly laughing and my son found this terribly amusing watching me, was the episode where she runs out of her own cafe shouting 'my fire is on fire!'. i was laughing for about an hour. anyway, all in all, its a good one to buy. my son doesnt seem to mind that its old fashioned compared to the new cartoons, he likes it just as much as underground ernie, although the super corny, outdated theme song can really get to you after you've heard it for the 100th time. but then again, least its not postman pat (which is so self righteous it makes me wince).
Fantasic. Classic kids TV January 13, 2006 24 out of 28 found this review helpful
My one-year old loves this. Its the original TV series and is full of charm and fun. It makes me laugh and my son is captovated by it. Unlike the later series it has a Welsh flavour and is very good value.
This is the old series - not bad but a bit slow and clunky April 21, 2005 Mr. Stuart Bruce (Bristol, UK) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
The cover of this DVD is deceptive- it shows the puppet from the 2005 re-make of the series, but it contains a selection of episodes from the original series (filmed in the mid-80s- not the 70s as one of the other reviews says). The old episodes have a bit more 'rustic charm' about them with their one-man narration and jerky animation, rather than the heavily polished recent re-make, so bear in mind that young kids might now find the old series a little bit slow and uneventful if they're expecting the action sequences and drama of more recent kids TV. Now they've brought out the complete set of all the old episodes, at a cost that's not too much more than the cost of this selection, then you might be better off buying the complete box set rather than this. After all, if the point is to get the kids to sit down and watch quietly for hours, then the more the merrier, as this disc runs out a bit too fast.
