Good, but why didn't they do any of the other episodes? November 18, 2006 Joe G (Stockton, England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is supposed to be the best of, but it is hardly the best. Only six episodes from series one to three. This DVD was released at the end of series seven! There are a few online petitions looking for a complete box set DVD, and I think that is a good idea. Especially with the idea of the series ending. There's still another 100 episodes left, ITV!
Zany Brit classic - just a shame the entire series isn't available August 13, 2006 Keith Joseph (West Berkshire, England) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
First shown on ITV in 1999 to 2000, and now being repeated on cITV at the time of writing. The series title describes the main plot. Since their parents died, Mel (troubled cynical teenager), Josh (sharp young boy survivor) and Lucy Barker (young girl techno nerd) have been in foster care. They have been shoved around many new families but always ended up being rejected. But this time they end up in the care of two aliens, Sophie and Brian, who have recently crash landed on earth. Much of the zany humour revolves round the aliens failed attempt to blend in, the children's fear of rejection and the children's realisation that they can con mum & dad (for a while) as they don't even know human children shouldn't live on just chocolate. Also it's up to the children to keep their foster parents' real identities secret whilst dealing with the normal problems of everyday life (school, friends and embarrassing morphing parents). There were over 100 episodes of this award winning series filmed, and naturally although many are classics, some are just funny in parts (but never dull). Also mum changes around a bit as the series moves on (not a real problem as the aliens are shape shifters with no real concept of proper human behaviour). Special effects very good, certainly more than adaquate for the plot. There are only six episodes offered here. Strangely not the excellent one showing why the children were initially adopted by the aliens (largely because the local pet shop owner refused to sell Brian a dog, but the adoption agency were less discerning). The episodes on the DVD are : Skirting the issue, When things go bad, The bribe, The wedding, Crazy for you, and Howie. Personally I prefered the original child cast (Mel left for 'Canada' later) when the humour was fresher and acting better (both Sophie's were great though). This DVD has Mel and offers a good selection with both Sophie's, and my kids love them. We happily bought this DVD, but you can also rent. So a very high quality children's sitcom, just a shame the DVD has so few episodes, as I'm sure a 4 DVD 'best of' set would prove more popular (but you can catch the re-runs on Sky). For your kid's also try `The Goodies' DVD sets which have a similar zany feel, Eerie Indiana (boys), and the Worst Witch (essential viewing for girls).
