| Customer Reviews:
Excellent. Totally. July 16, 2008 Music lover. (England.) The only one of these series I had ever seen on tv was Hector's House when it was shown a few years ago, and I loved how each episode ended with Hector the lovable old Basset Hound being zoomed in on for a close-up, where he said something like "I'm just a great big silly old Hector" or something similar, it was so funny, and endearing too. I had seen some of Roobarb and Custard online and loved the theme tune and the stories I saw, especially the one where Roobarb went out into the cold air and saw breath on the air and thought his mouth was on fire. That was so funny, and it was what decided me to get this box set, though really I only wanted Roobarb, as I already had got the Hector dvd and had never heard of the Flumps, but I'm so glad I got this complete set. The Flumps are really fuuny. They are little furry blobs, covered in hair, with eyes like chocolate buttons, apart from the one that has blue eyes, they have hands on the side of their faces and feet underneath. There is a family of them, and they appear to live underground, as there are tree roots growing in their dwelling, like in the house of the Pogles in Pogles Wood, (I have the dvd of The Pogles, which is also great), Grandfather Flump plays something called a Flumpet and looks like a trumpet. When I first saw them I found the voice used for the Flumps to be a little irritating, but I have got used to it now, someone called Gay Soper, and when she does the young Flump voice it sounds even worse, as though she has got a stuffy cold or something and it is rather annoying to listen to, but one gets used to it and it even becomes funny after a time. Hector's House was originally made in French I think and the English voices are dubbed on. Again, the voice used for the cat and the frog, sound really irritating, but dear old Hector sounds delightful. Hector and Zsa Zsa the cat live together in Hector's House, and Mrs. Frog visits from over the wall, and she is really rather silly with her daft little hat and what looks like a matching overall. Roobarb is brilliant. Witty and clever and so very, very funny. The voices are all done by Richard Briers and he is perfect for it. Poor Roobarb is always inventing things and having good ideas that never seem to go completely right, and Custard the odious pink cat, and all the birds always laugh at him. I have the first two of the new Roobarb DVDs too, but I prefer this original series, mainly because I think they brought too many characters into the new series, I didn't much like Poodle Princess and Moggy Malone, they are quite annoying characters, I much prefer the limited line-up of just Custard, Roobarb, the birds, and the occasional visit from Mole, and the other two just once or twice in the series and not in every episode which they nearly always are in the new series. This box set is great. You get all the DVDs in their original cases, all housed in an outer slipcase. Perfect entertainment value. And very nicely presented too. You can't go wrong.
