Great Show August 26, 2006 George Buttner (Dayton, Ohio United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
"George Shrinks" is another wonderful Nelvana program that aired for a while as part of PBSKids' Bookworm Bunch. It then aired as a separate series for a while, but my local station no longer airs it, so I was pleased to find this video. I have the VHS version (which isn't listed here at Amazon), so I can't comment on the DVD features, but I can give you an overall review of the stories, etc. There are at least two "George Shrinks" episodes on this --- "Sunken Treasure" George is with his best friend, Becky, looking for a lost toy in the attic. He finds the lost toy, but he also finds something else --- a secret room he didn't know about before. The secret room contains a journal detailing toys lost by a kid in the lake in the backyard. When George learns that the writer is still alive and now a retired man, he goes on an adventure in the lake to find his toys. But there's danger to be faced, including a vicious "chomper." A fun tale of adventure and courage." "Can We Keep Him?" George finds an injured mouse while searching for the "squeaker" that goes with his brother Junior's toy duck. He saves the mouse from the neighborhood stray cat. Soon, he's fast friends with the mouse as he helps to get better, but he begins negletcing Junior. This story is about finding new friends, but making sure to keep the ones you already have. The VHS version (and probably the DVD as well) also includes a full-length bonus episode of Maurice Sendak's "Seven Little Monsters," featuring the voice of Colin Mochrie and theme music by the Barenaked Ladies (Chicken Little --- "One Little Slip.") In this episode, the seven little monsters argue over who's in charge when their Mom sends them to the store. Overall, the quality is great. The only problem is that there are no close-captions --- but perhaps the DVD version has either them or subtitles.
