Inspiring Documentary on US Air Force Thunderbirds squadron September 22, 2007 Dennis Hall (Elk Grove, CA) As a friend of the US Air Force Thunderbirds squadron through Thunderbirds50.com and other media endeavors, I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of this documentary America's Team, Being a US Air Force Thunderbird in Las Vegas during August 2007. The USAF Thunderbirds have been thrilling audiences since 1953 with their precision formation and solo aerobatic maneuvers. The Thunderbirds, with their immaculate red-white-and blue Air Force F-16C fighter jets have been seen by millions of people all over the world, hence their moniker "America's Ambassadors in Blue". Yet, a relatively few people really know what it takes behind the scenes to earn membership into this highly competitive squadron where enlisted and Non-Commissioned Officers must earn their coveted Thunderbirds patch through a rigorous 21-day duties' and interview process, and pilots practice twice a day for weeks their dozen or more formation and solo mind and body wrenching maneuvers. Then during show season, travel over 200 days a year away from family throughout America and the world to safely execute their dazzling airshows. After 53 years, the first-time ever woman Thunderbirds pilot took to the skies during 2006 flying as Number 3, Right Wing ... Major Nicole Malachowski. Through the direction by John Campbell and the award-winning videography talent of Paul Frederick, "America's Team, Being a USAF Thunderbird" follows her and the entire Thunderbirds squadron through the paces of life within this unique Air Force squadron including at home and on the road, to show what it's really like to be a part of America's team and interact with the fans. Paul Frederick used various special-effect techniques to capture the true essence of the pride and determination of each member of the Thunderbirds squadron as well as the home front support. John Campbell and Paul Frederick mixed in wonderfully, inspiring and exhilarating music to accompany the scenes fostering a rich sensory, emotional experience. This DVD documentary is inspirational for personal and family use and as a gift item, and further for donation as a DVD for libraries, silent auctions, etc. Honeywell Corporation financially supported its production and marketing. The owners and managers of Galaxy Theaters in Las Vegas are major fans of our USAF Thunderbirds, so hosted the entire Thunderbirds squadron with their families and friends, Thunderbirds alumni, and media to come see its debut on one of their huge theater screens. What a phenomenal production!
