Be shocked and terrified... at how poor this is! September 23, 2007 James McGovern (UK) The title of this film (the original title of which is "Zombi 3") ought to speak for itself really. Nonetheless, there are times when we see a bad film for one reason or another. You know when a film is so bad that it's actually almost brilliant? Well, this film is so bad that it really isn't funny, at least on first viewing - but if you thought it was supposed to be a comedy, then you probably would be laughing more than you've ever laughed in your life! Both the acting and dubbing are absolutely hilarious, and the special effects are shockingly embarrassing. They cannot be described, however, one has to see them to believe how poor they are, even for a fairly low budget film of 1988, when this film was made. It also successfully manages to steal elements from far superior films and ruin them completely, unfortunately. We'll never be able to watch "Dawn of the Dead" again without thinking of this abomination. As other reviewers pointed out, Lucio Fulci did not in fact have any involvement with the making of much of this film due to health reasons, and so cannot take the blame for it. Whoever must take the blame though doesn't really matter; what matters is that this film exists. However, I do recommend people go see it, because if you expect it to be poor you may actually find it hilarious (though you'll still be shocked at how woeful it is!). So although I give it a very low rating, it is in some ways almost good - as a comedy. Unfortunately, this film is taking itself seriously, and that's where it fails miserably. Ah, well - at least it's good for its unintentional humour, unlike most appalling films!
theyre coming! August 16, 2006 Mr. Russell C. Witheyman 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Zombie flesh eaters 2 or zombi 3 as its known abroad(confusing eh!) is actually not bad..there are far worse italian zombie films out there than this..i.e zombie creeping flesh and zombie dead which are pretty mediocre especially zombie dead which was awful. This isnt actually all directed by lucio fulci he only directed some of it as he fell ill during filming. Now its not as good a zombie flesh 1 but hey apart from the romero films what else is..its a pretty good zombie actioner with the usual bad dubbing and dialogue but i guess this isnt citizen kane is it! the zombies are a bit too energetic at times a la umberto lenzi's nightmare city but if you want a decent no brainer zombie film this is it.
THE ZOMBIES SHOULDN'T HAVE BOTHERED TO COME BACK TO LIFE!!!! April 6, 2006 stuart (MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
To review this film and get some good background on it I need to start from the beginning. The beginning of this is really George A. Romero's Dawn Of The Dead. When Dawn Of The Dead came out in '79, Lucio Fulci decided to make an indirect sequel to the film and call it Zombie 2. That one we all know as Zombie Flesh Eaters, after that film came out and made a lot of money the Italians decided lets make some more zombie films. So Zombie 3 (Zombie Flesh Eaters 2) was born. The story on this one is really just a rehash of stories we've seen in a lot of American zombie films we've seen before. The best comparison that comes to mind is Return Of The Living Dead - the storyline is exactly the same in the sense that the government are are making experiments with a toxic gas that will turn people into zombies, the canister gets released into the population and we have zombies everywhere wanting human flesh. A bunch of people start running away from the zombies and end up in an abandoned hotel. There was a lot of trouble during the filming of this movie. First and foremost Lucio Fulci was sick so he couldn't really finish the film he wanted to. The film was then handed down to two lesser directors Bruno Mattei (Hell Of The Living Dead) and Claudio Fragasso (Zombie 4). They did their best to spice up a film that was already not that good. Fulci himself didn't really have his heart and soul in this film. He gave the film over to the producers for them to do whatever they wanted with it and by god they did. And that is why we have a bad zombie film with Fulci credited as its director. The main problem in my opinion is that its such a pointless bore. There is no substance to it what so ever. After the first few minutes in which some terrorists steal the toxic gas and accidentally release it, the rest of the film is just a group of empty soulless character with no personality at all running from zombies. In some cases this can be fun if: 1) the zombie make up and zombie action is good and 2) there is lots or blood and gore involved. Here we get neither, there is some inspired moments in there, like for example when some birds get infected by the gas they attack people. There is also a scene involving a flying zombie head (which defies all logic and explanation) and a zombie coming out of the hotel pool to eat a woman's leg. But aside from that the rest of the film fall flat. Endless upon endless scenes that don't do anything to move the already non existent plot along. That was my main gripe with the film. The sets look unfinished and the art direction is practically non existent, I hate it when everything looks so unfinished, I like b-movies but this one was pushing below that. The zombie make up? terrible. The zombies are all Asian actors (the film was filmed up in the Phillippines) but thats not a big problem since the film was set in the Phillipine islands anyway. Its the look of the zombies that really sucks and they all died wearing the same clothes for some reason, what passes here for zombie make up is a couple of smudges of black on their faces. It still wasn't good enough to impress. Its just some goo pointlessly splattered on the actors faces. Not only is is the film slowly paced but the zombies look terrible (in a bad way). Those coming here expecting a Fulci masterpiece don't because its mostly somebody else's film so if you want a good zombie flick don't get this and buy any other zombie film and leave this on the shelf. Thank you for reading my review.
More action than horror, but good entertainment nevetheless March 9, 2005 alanf1135 (Greenock, Scotland) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
First of all I have to say this isn't a classic of the zombie genre but rather a progression that fits in with the times, where in the late 80's action took over from shock throughout the horror genre (this was shoot at the time when the Nightmare on Elm Street films started to go bad)Saying that, it did have some creepy scenes especially one of the hero's encountered zombie's coming out of the cave and being attacked from all angles by zombie's in the adjoining holiday complex and towards the end where the hero's are all holed up in an abandoned hotel. There were some good inovations to the genre especially zombies that were fast moving and could do kung-fu, talking zombies (the zombie DJ was based on the DJ from Vanishing Point which was directed by the Deran Sarafian's father), a flying zombie head and last but not least zombie birds! Again, with a Bruno Mattei film it is solid entertainment and is not to be taken seriously. Other reviewers have complained about plot and production values but this adds to the charm of the film and actually makes it more watchable, compared to those po-faced 'pyschobable' serial killer nonsense that is being churned out of Hollywood by the score these days, this isn't a bad thing.
zombie flesh eaters 2- the great sequel October 9, 2004 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Everyone knows zombie flesh eaters was a huge hit everywhere. It is uncut in every country, but america, and if i were you i'd go to america and buy it right now( if i could find it ). this was such a good film(obviously)lucio fulci started to make another incredibly gory zombie splatter movie. Zombie flesh eaters 2 was yet another brilliant hit. More gore, more zombies, more violence. But no zombies doing kung fu. As tons of magazines say. Still definitly one to look out for.4 stars.
